Vatican City is a country located within the city of Rome. With an area of approximately 110 acres and a population of just over 1,000, it is the smallest state in the world by both area and population. The city-state is ruled by the pope, in existence since 1929, on the Vatican Hill in Rome, and includes Saint Peter's Basilica, the Sistine Chapel, and the Vatican Museums.

Vatican City is distinct from the Holy See and is the main episcopal see of 1.2 billion Latin and Eastern Catholic adherents around the globe.
