Mary is known by many different titles (Blessed Mother, Madonna, Our Lady), epithets (Star of the Sea, Queen of Heaven, Cause of Our Joy), invocations (Panagia, Mother of Mercy) and other names (Our Lady of Fátima, Our Lady of Lourdes). All of these titles refer to the same individual named Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ (in the New Testament) and are used variably by Roman Catholics, among other denominations. Many of the titles given to Mary are dogmatic in nature; others are poetic, allegorical, or are depictions of Mary in the history of art[1].
Bellairs Corpus[]
- During Vatican III, a Commission on Marian Titles met to read a list of possible titles and vote them by waving a lily (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies, 92). The full was laid out to impress the photographers from Life as it stretched from Saint Peter's to 38 Via Pulcinella. Such a list would be long, yes, but Bellairs is obviously exaggerating just a bit.
