The Letter, the Witch, and the Ring is John Bellairs’s third book in the Lewis Barnavelt series, continuing the adventures of Lewis Barnavelt; his friend, Rose Rita Pottinger; his uncle, Jonathan; and their neighbor, Mrs. Zimmermann. The relationship between Rose Rita and Mrs. Zimmermann is first shown in this story as the two spend part of their summer together visiting northern Michigan following the death of Mrs. Zimmermann's cousin. While on vacation things turns sinister when Mrs. Zimmermann runs into an old rival, falls ill, and ultimately disappears- leaving Rose Rita to face her fears and find her friend.
