South Bend is a city in north-central Indiana, on the Saint Joseph River near its southernmost bend, from which it derives its name. It is the fourth-largest city in Indiana, serving as the economic and cultural hub of Northern Indiana. It is home to the University of Notre Dame.
John Bellairs left for college in 1955, headed to the University of Notre Dame. As a senior, he continued his membership with the Bookmen and joined the staff of the student magazine, the Scholastic - where we see some of Bellairs's earliest published work. Also during his senior year he took part in the nationally televised College Quiz Bowl program. Bellairs graduated in 1959 with his bachelor’s degree in English with plans for graduate school in Chicago.
