Dr. Samp hypothesizes in his book, Some Puzzling Remnants, that the figure atop the bell tower of the Cathedral of Saint Gorboduc is a "very fat" cherub rather a statue of Buddha (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies; 36).

Samp is dried corn kernels that have been stamped and chopped until broken.  According to the American Heritage dictionary, "samp" is of Native American origin. New Englanders since early colonial times have referred to cornmeal mush or cereal as "samp."[1]
