Mammoth Cave National Park is an underground cave system that Lewis Barnavelt thinks of when he sees the word CAVE displayed in the enchanted stained glass window, wrongly assuming the word refers to something underground (The Beast under the Wizard's Bridge, 30).

Inspiration[]

Mammoth Cave is the longest cave system known in the world, part of the 52,000-plus-acre Mammoth Cave National Park located in central Edmonson County, Kentucky[1]. With over 390 miles of passageways, early guide Stephen Bishop called the cave a "grand, gloomy and peculiar place," but its vast chambers and complex labyrinths have earned its name-Mammoth. Incidentally no fossils of the woolly mammoth have ever been found with the caves; the name has nothing to do with this extinct mammal but rather the cave’s immense size.
