Mal de siècle was a malady that besieged Pope Sporus VI in the twilight of his reign (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies, 57).

French for “sickness of the century”[1], referring to the ennui, disillusionment, and melancholy experienced by primarily young adults of Europe's early 19th century, and, in turn, a play on the phrase fin de siècle ("end of the century"[2]), a term used for the end of the 19th Century in Europe, France and/or Paris.
