Jan ter Koot is a Dutch mystic who, in 1253, claimed to know who the real pope was during the Grand Central Schism - but no one cared (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies, 59).

Inspiration

A parody of a Dutch name with echoes of coot (a foolish or eccentric fellow)[1]. The similarly-named Jan de Doot is the subject of a painting from 1655 by Carel van Savoyen[2].
