Francis Spellman is a priest who is mentioned in the notes found in the desk of a New York advertising executive as potentially being carried by dwarves (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies; 27).

Francis Joseph Spellman (1889-1967) was the sixth Archbishop of New York from 1939 to 1967, having previously served as an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Boston (1932–39). He was named a cardinal in 1946[1]. As the archbishop at the time Saint Fidgeta was written, Bellairs’s text makes for a doubly squat image since Spellman was a short and notably rotund man.
