Ferdinand Count Fathom Childermass is the brother of Professor Roderick Childermass (The Chessmen of Doom; 6). Nothing but his name is ever mentioned and therefore he is presumed deceased.
While the professor does attend one of his brother's funerals in Springfield, Massachusetts (The Mummy, the Will, and the Crypt; 101), it is never made clear whose service he is attending.
Inspiration[]
Marcus Childermass, a professor of literature, named his sons for characters in the novels of Tobias Smollett. The Adventures of Ferdinand, Count Fathom (1753), Smollett's third novel, tells the adventures of the villainous title character[1].
