Cardinal Bobbo was an enemy of Pope Sporus VI, as the two spent time trying to poison each other. Bobbo sent the pope tainted quinces, who in return gifted lute filled with tarantulas - and so on. Sporus eventually had the cardinal thrown down a well (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies, 56).

There isn't much to say about the fictitious priests Balbo and Bobbo.  While Myers says there could be a veiled Tolkien influence, a la Bilbo Baggins, chances are the name was just made-up[1].
