The Act of Contrition is a prayer that, according to the Handbook for Grade School Nuns, is impossible recite perfectly just prior to death (Saint Fidgeta and Other Parodies, 108).

Inspiration[]

An act of contrition is a Catholic prayer genre that expresses sorrow for sins. It may be used in a liturgical service or be used privately, especially in connection with an examination of conscience. The Act of Contrition is part of the Sacrament of Penance and is prayed by the penitent after the priest assigns a penance and before he gives the penitent absolution. It is also customarily said especially before one goes to bed at night[1].

Traditional version[]

O my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee, and I detest all my sins, because I dread the loss of heaven and the pains of hell, but most of all because they offend Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve with the help of thy grace to confess my sins, to do penance, and to amend my life. Amen.
