Biographical Events

  • Spring
    • John first tells his story of Saint Fidgeta at a graduate student party in Fitschen's Hyde Park apartment in Chicago.
  • April
    • John joins the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) at the rank of instructor; he's a member until 1966 [1].

  • October 29
    • John attends a lecture by Robert Cahlman, from the American National Theater and Academy, on the history of great costumes in theater.  John modeled Rex Harrison's costume for Henry VIII, "Shadow", and Jackie Gleason in his famous mountain climbing suit. Fellow instructor Norbert Geier wore costumes representing Prospero, Cyrano, and the Music Man[2].
  • November 22
    • The first of four subsequent night performances of Bellairs playing the role of "Joshua" in Jean Anouilh's "Ring Round the Moon."
  • Winter
    • John is in enrolled in classes at the University of Chicago for Winter quarter[3]. He leaves the doctoral program having completed all requirements except his dissertation.
